Fi and Tractive are two of the most popular GPS trackers for dogs. Both can help find a lost dog, track activity, and send walks to Strava, and both need a subscription. The real differences are design, where they work, and how you pay.
The quick verdict
- Choose Fi if you're in the US and want an all-in-one smart collar with long battery life.
- Choose Tractive if you want to keep your dog's current collar, travel outside the US, or want heart and respiratory rate monitoring (Premium).
- Skip both if you mainly want to track and motivate walks. Your phone does that for free.

Design: a new collar, or a clip for the one you have?
Fi is a smart collar: the tracker is part of the collar system, and the Series 3+ adds an LED light. Tractive is a small clip-on tracker that attaches to the collar or harness your dog already wears. If you love your current collar, or your dog wears a harness, Tractive is simpler. If you want one tidy all-in-one device, Fi is appealing.
Cost: both need a plan
GPS trackers send location over cellular networks, so both brands charge a subscription. Tractive's price drops the longer you commit. At the time of writing, Premium ran from about $10 a month on a 1-year plan to about $5 a month on a 5-year plan. Fi bundles pricing differently. Its Fi Mini launched at $129 a year with the hardware and a year of membership included. Compare total cost over two or three years, not just the monthly number.
Coverage: the US or the world
This one is simple. Strava's help page for the Fi integration notes that the Fi app is only available in the US, while Tractive works in more than 175 countries. If you live outside the US, or travel with your dog, Tractive is the practical choice.
Battery and health features
Fi says the Series 3+ lasts up to 3 months per charge. Tractive lists up to 2 weeks for the DOG 6 and up to 6 weeks for the larger DOG 6 XL. Real-world battery life depends on how often you use live tracking.
Both track activity and sleep. Tractive's Premium plan adds heart and respiratory rate monitoring. Fi highlights behavior detection, like scratching and licking, and its community features such as breed and location leaderboards.
Strava and walk tracking
Both send walks to Strava. Fi syncs walks that go beyond your dog's Safe Zone, and Tractive uploads walks recorded after you connect your accounts. More on Strava for dogs.
Do you need a GPS tracker at all?
A tracker is a safety device first. It's worth it for escape artists (Huskies, Beagles, sighthounds, and Jack Russells), rural areas, and dogs who panic at fireworks.
If what you really want is to walk more consistently and see your progress, you don't need hardware. Your phone can record every walk for free.
