The January dog-walking challenge: 12 walks, your pace
A free January dog-walking challenge: aim for 12 walks, use four weekly prompts, and adjust the plan when winter weather calls for rest.
Aim for 12 walks during January, at your dog's pace. Three a week is a useful target, but a missed day does not end the challenge. A short neighborhood loop counts. Start on any January day and adjust the plan to fit your dog and the weather.
How to do the challenge
- Pick a walk length that is comfortable for your dog.
- Mark each completed walk toward 12. Spread them across four weeks or adapt if you start late.
- Give each week a small theme from the prompts below.
- Rest when conditions call for it. The goal is a habit you can keep, not a perfect calendar.
Four weekly prompts
- Week 1: start close to home. Repeat a comfortable route and notice what time of day works for your dog.
- Week 2: add one new turn. Keep the distance familiar, but let your dog explore one different block or path.
- Week 3: make room for sniffing. Choose one walk where your dog sets the pace and has time to investigate.
- Week 4: return to a favorite. Revisit the best route of the month and notice what became easier.
Track your 12 walks: check one box after each walk. You can uncheck a box to correct a mistake.

Make the plan work in winter
January weather will interrupt some plans. Read the winter dog-walking guide before cold or icy days, and use the live cold-walk checker when deciding between a walk and a short bathroom outing. For evening walks, follow the after-dark checklist.
Track walks in Pupnik
Pupnik records your route, minutes, and distance and helps you build a walking rhythm. In-app seasons have their own tasks and rewards when one is active. This public 12-walk challenge is self-directed; it does not promise a separate January reward.
Carry the habit into February
Keep the routine that worked instead of increasing distance automatically. February 22 is National Walk Your Dog Day—a natural date to invite a friend on a favorite route or celebrate the walks you kept through winter.
