Tractive Dog Walk alternatives for iPhone
Replacing the retired Tractive Dog Walk app? Compare phone-only walk recording with the current Tractive GPS app, and choose an option for walks together.

Want to record walks without buying a collar device?
A phone app such as Pupnik, WoofTrax, or Strava can record outings you take together. If you need to find your dog when you are apart, choose a device attached to the dog and a suitable pet-tracking service.
The standalone Dog Walk app was retired.
Tractive’s official retirement notice says Dog Walk became unsupported on January 1, 2025. It directs owners to the Walk feature in the core Tractive GPS app. That matters if you remember a simple walk recorder and are now looking for a similar phone-only routine.
There are two questions to separate before switching: “How do I save our walks?” and “How do I locate my dog?” A phone can answer the first while you carry it. A phone-only recorder cannot answer the second when your dog is elsewhere.
Current Tractive Walk and Pupnik, compared
Tractive’s Walk setup guide calls for a tracker on your pet, the app signed in, phone location services, and Bluetooth. The walk trace itself follows your phone’s GPS. Its LIVE-versus-WALK explanation makes the distinction clear: LIVE gets location from the pet’s tracker.
| Question | Tractive GPS app | Pupnik |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the walk route come from? | Phone GPS in Walk mode | Your iPhone’s GPS |
| What setup do I need? | A Tractive tracker, a subscription, and the phone app | An iPhone with iOS 17 or later; no collar device |
| Can it locate my dog away from me? | LIVE uses the pet’s tracker; separate from Walk | No; it records the phone you carry |
| What is the reason to choose it? | You want the Tractive pet-tracking system as well as a walk history | You want phone-only outings with collectibles, levels, and streaks |
| What should I check before paying? | Device and subscription requirements for your region | Free download; optional Pupnik+ details in the app |
| Will it import old Dog Walk records? | Check directly with Tractive support | No direct Tractive Dog Walk import |
Three phone-only options for new walks
- Pupnik, if you want playful progress.Record new outings on an iPhone and give your dog’s profile a game layer. Read our iPhone tracker walkthrough and the official listing.
- WoofTrax, if a cause motivates you.Its free app records walks and supports participating animal charities, with groups and challenges. See WoofTrax’s own explanation.
- Strava, if you already use it.Keep your outings in an existing fitness log using walk recording and the With Pet tag. Free recording and sharing are available, with a paid plan for extras.
These choices cover different motivations. Compare them in our guide to making daily walks more fun. If your actual goal is pet-location hardware, use the Fi versus Tractive guide instead.
Switch without losing sight of what you need.
- Keep your old records. Save any exports or screenshots you already have. Ask Tractive about access to old history if that matters to you.
- Choose the job. Pick a phone recorder for outings together, or a pet-tracking system for independent location. You may want both.
- Start with a familiar loop. Record a short walk, finish it, and check the route and duration before relying on the new routine.
- Check the current terms. Review permissions, subscription limits, and what the app saves. Avoid paying for features you have not tried.
Pupnik starts a new walk history. It does not restore your old Tractive account or transfer those walks. If the part you miss is simply taking your phone and your dog outside, a phone-only recorder may meet that need.
